Keith Raniere, líder de la secta NXIVM, contrató a Jeffrey Lichtman, el abogado de Joaquín Guzmán Loera “El Chapo” y de su esposa, Emma Coronel, para que lo represente legalmente, presente una moción y se reponga el juicio donde resultó culpable de siete cargos criminales y por el que fue condenado a 120 años de prisión.
También integró a su defensa a Marc Fernich, quien presentó también una moción a nombre de “El Chapo”. En un comunicado, Lichtman apuntó que hay nuevos hechos importantes que cuestionan seriamente algunas de las pruebas más perjudiciales presentadas en su contra en el juicio.
“Fui contactado por Keith respecto a nuevos hechos significativos que llaman a cuestionar seriamente algunas de las evidencias más perjudiciales presentadas en su contra en el juicio”, dijo.
“Tras una revisión inicial acepté representar a Keith y avanzar en una moción para un nuevo juicio. Marc y yo simplemente advertimos a todos apreciar que cualquier acusado de un crimen merece justicia y un juicio justo, sin importar quiénes son y de qué cargos los han acusado, incluyendo a Keith Raniere y sus coacusados”.
Por su parte, Marc Fenich señaló que “la autonomía personal y elección individual, por poco ortodoxos que sean, son valores esenciales” y agregó que el gobierno no debería vigilar la moralidad del sujeto.
